Abstract
Qualitative Research in Orthodontics: the "Why", "What", "Who", and "How"!
Qualitative research is pivotal in advancing orthodontics by providing an in-depth understanding of patient experiences, expectations, and perceptions. This lecture will explore the "Why", "What", "Who", and "How" of qualitative research in the field of orthodontics. We will begin by addressing the "Why"—the importance of qualitative research in capturing the nuanced aspects of patient care that quantitative methods may overlook. Next, we will delve into the "What"—the key topics and themes that qualitative research investigates, including patient satisfaction, compliance, and psychosocial impacts of orthodontic treatment. The "Who" segment will identify the primary stakeholders involved, from patients and practitioners to researchers and policy-makers. Finally, the "How" will focus on the methodologies employed in qualitative research, such as interviews, focus groups, and ethnographic studies, highlighting best practices and ethical considerations. By illuminating these four critical aspects, this lecture aims to underscore the value of qualitative research in shaping patient-centered orthodontic care and guiding future innovations in the field.
